Best Practices for Migrating a legacy ECM

Upgrading your legacy ECM tips

For many organizations the headaches of migrating from a legacy system to a new one is painful enough, however, when it deals with the organizations ECM (enterprise content management) system and the critical information stored on those documents it is almost unbearable.  Over the years through changing business requirements, to new regulations, content has been scattered to various different data silos.  Which is why you have a ECM in the first place, however, the old ECM can’t support your organizations needs anymore.  If this sounds like you and/or your organization here are some tips to make it a little less painless.

  1. Remember there is really 2 migrations that will happen, moving from one proprietary ECM to a new one and moving the content is another.
  2. Look to migrate into the cloud, most ECM choices today are offered as a SaaS or hosted solution, so you won’t have to worry about IT infrastructure.
  3. Strategically plan what data and documents should be done immediately and what can what.
  4. Select content for migration based on relevance to your organizational goals first.

I hope these tips will help you in your project for migrating ECM systems. And if you’d like to read more about this topic, check out Migrating a Legacy ECM article by John Newton.
