Picking the right ECM for your Organization

How to pick the right ECM for your organization.

With all the buzz around ECM or enterprise content management, also known as document management systems and software, how do you know what ECM is right for your organization?  After all it is a major commitment of both resources and organizational direction since it will be used by almost every employee of your organization.  In an article from TechTarget about ECM and it’s adoption success, the MIT press director of technology stresses that your staff must be on board with the software as end users are picky with the software they use.

But that still doesn’t answer the question of which ECM software is right for your organization?  When determining what is the right software for your organization, Chris Doig wrote a great article in CIO, about starting the process by developing a requirements profile and then reverse engineering the features from potential requirements.  This is important in my opinion because it helps organizations uncover requirements that you may not have known that you need.

Start with asking these following questions:

  1. What are my organizational requirements?
  2. What is my budget?
  3. What kind of integration will be needed to my other systems and platforms?
  4. Will I need to migrate unstructured data to the new system?
  5. What is the timeline for implementation?

Asking these 5 questions at the start of the ECM software buying cycle will help you define the scope and optimize your software purchasing experience.  And if you have specific questions please feel free to reach out to us about your organizations needs at sales@medimicro.com.  You can also stay up-to-date with ECM news by following us on twitter @medimicro
